Still Christmas shopping?

Bookish_display
This Saturday I am participating in Make's Urban Holiday Bazaar. I have really been looking forward to this event- not just for the other crafters that I enjoy seeing, but for Christmas presents, music, the runway show, and so much more.

Just look at some of these cute, cute things!

Brian and I will both be there with coffee, quilts, new artwork, bags, and Bookish mugs in tow. This is a great time to see us if you have been interested in one or more of the Bookish product line!

Great news, my future child!

Treehouses
If my baby wasn't too young to read, I would try to convince her to be excited about Haven Kimmel's new children's book, coming out in February 2008. It hit my Amazon wishlist like a tidal wave this afternoon when I realized how very lucky our future children are going to be with this talented author splitting her time between children's books and adult fiction.

I already feel lucky for having read her previous works, and I wait impatiently for the newest, The Used World, to show up on my library hold list. Ah Patience, will you always elude me?

The cold weather, the parade of soups and hot drinks, the wrapping up in quilts, the delicious pull of naps... all these things conspire to shift my focus from sewing to books.

The holidays are here and will be upon us before we know it- so I'd best get back to sewing if all my presents intend to be finished and wrapped up in time!

Smells like a home.

There are so many simple pleasures that make up my daily life, and few more satisfying than baking homemade bread. This afternoon I put my kneading biceps to work filling up the pantry with whole wheat bread, cinnamon bread, and pizza dough.

As a food item, it is softer and more tasty-- even somehow more real than bread that comes prepackaged in a bag from the store. It goes better with eggs for breakfast, makes a lovely sandwich, and finishes off a dinner presentation with a flourish.

As a beacon of home, comfort, rightness, and goodness, there is something medicinal in every slice.

Breadhandbook
For as long as I've been baking bread, the Martha Stewart Baking Handbook has been my guide. She challenged me on to yeast breads when I only dabbled in breakfast breads- and usually the ones that come in a mix at that.

Nigella's Domestic Goddess book has also been very handy and informative. The hearth breads are always a huge hit and extremely easy- very little hand kneading. Her pita recipe goes beautifully with Brian's hummus- in fact most things do, now that I think about it.

The next stage in my bread odyssey is going to take me in the direction of specialized breads that come in specialized shapes. French bread, baguettes, and popovers here I come.

A sneaky way to shop.

Rug
I love the shop wishlist. It doesn't cost a dime, but it's a good way to remember what you love in a particular store and keep tabs on when it goes on sale.

For instance, my Anthropologie wishlist is ever growing, and completely satisfies my desire to place a claim on all the things I love, but can't actually afford yet. The line for little girls bodes well (ill?) for my future daughter. If I could clothe her in costumes and animal ears every day, I would.

This rug is my ideal complement to the nursery's colors and theme. I love the old world style glamour coupled with little girl colors. I think it would go perfectly with the fabric I've picked to make the crib bedding. I picked up a yard on a whim-- just in case the baby was a girl-- and have looked at it everyday since to decide if I really like it as much as I thought I did. Nurseryfabric

I love how this fabric isn't overwhelmingly young, and could potentially carry her through several stages of little girlness. I love how it matches the cream wood floors and yellow curtains that are already in the room. I love how with the nursery's gray walls, yellow, cream, and pink, it could possibly be a great foil for Rachel Solomon's art print "Another Time".

Can you tell I've been quietly stewing and planning for days now?

Cinnamon spice and everything nice.

This week we found out our tiny 20-week old baby is a girl! My mind is racing with girlness- onesies with liberty of london patches, a pink and cream quilt, girl names, and just how sure I am that she's going to be a daddy's girl.
Giraffeonesie
I've been scouring the internet to find cool baby things that support artists and artisans. I know at some point we will buy our daughter a paper airplane onesie from Freelisa. This giraffe onesie at Mahar Drygoods is completely precious too.

We bought an antique dresser yesterday to fit everything in. The work continues on fixing up the nursery. I'm still feeling great- lots of energy and tip top health. Now I just need to find endless time for sewing cute little outfits myself. And rereading all of Jane Austen's books.

Saturday morning

I wish I could show you all the Christmas surprises I have stacked around. I am finishing more and more gifts and want to go ahead and give them so badly! Most years I try to be finished with Christmas shopping/making by Thanksgiving. It's going to be a stretch this year, but at least I'm almost finished gathering materials and actually deciding what to make.

Saturdaymorning_2

Because I can't show you the gifts from me, I will at least show off this happy little surprise I received in the mail the other day. Pregnancy Tea! While I lament that I can't drink all the coffee my heart desires, I can at least partake of this special hot drink just for me.

So here's my Saturday morning. Drinking hot tea while lazily tidying the house and making a big pot of Tuscan bean soup for dinner tonight. Yum.
